《胡适英文口述自传》是胡适对自己一生学术研究的总结评价。20世纪50年代,胡适应哥伦比亚大学“中国口述历史学部”之请,受唐德刚采访,以英文口述生平,总结一生学术思想,于1958年完成十六次正式录音。英文文稿由唐德刚根据录音整理而成,并于1959年经胡适手订。
《胡适英文口述自传》中,从投身文学革命,到审视中国哲学史,到重新发现禅宗的历史,再到批判性地研究白话小说,忆及文学、史学、哲学等方面主要思想。 《胡适英文口述自传》共分三部分:1)家庭与早年生活,2)在美国的学生生活(1910—1917),3)投身中国文艺复兴事业。
The Personal Reminiscences of Dr. Hu Shih is a product of sixteen taped interviews done in 1958 with the assistance of Dr. Te-kong Tong, then a staff member of the Chinese Oral History Project of the East Asian Institute of Columbia University, and edited by Dr. Hu in 1959. It is a retrospective account of his fertile scholarly career more than a life history. He discusses the early influences that shaped his theories of literary reform. He then reflects on his analyses of early Chinese philosophy, his discoveries in the history of Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism, and his critical studies of major Chinese novels.
The manuscript is divided into three major sections: 1) Family and Early Life; 2) Student Days in the United States (1910-1917); 3) Working for a Chinese Renaissance. Although terminated by Dr. Hu’s death, the autobiography retains his direct conversational style, polished by his own hand. It is the last extensive work in English by this eminent world figure.

胡适(1891-1962),安徽绩溪人,因提倡文学革命、思想革命而成为新文化运动的领袖之一。兴趣广泛,著述宏富,在文学、哲学、史学等诸多领域都有开创性的贡献。历任北京大学文学院院长、中国驻美国大使、北京大学校长、“中央研究院”院长等职。
唐德刚(1920-2009),安徽合肥人,美国哥伦比亚大学博士,历史学家、传记文学家。著有《李宗仁回忆录》、《胡适口述自传》、《顾维钧回忆录》、《胡适杂忆》、《袁氏当国》等,对口述历史的发展有很大贡献。

“三十年来我对这批美国友人的尊敬,真是始终如一。我至今相信,我当时对他们的观察是正确的。我的今日邻居,多半也还是这种人。但是今日我也知道,这也只是复杂的美国文明中的“豹之一斑”。它只是新英格兰(New England)和纽约郊区,白色新教徒中产阶级,尤其是所谓WASP阶级,“衣食足,礼义兴”之后生活方式的一环。我们如果把这一环当成全貌,那就难免以偏概全了。
胡适之先生乃至和胡氏同辈的有观察力、有学养的老辈留学生,他们言必称美国,并不是如一般洋奴大班的“崇洋”。只是他们早年,乃至暮年,对美国基督文明的感染,就始终没有跳出笔者上述的那个阶段。
胡先生那一辈的留美学生,可以说全是中国士大夫阶级里少爷小姐出身的。他们漂洋过海,又钻进了美国WASP的社会里来,心理上、生活上,真是如鱼得水,一拍即合。但是这个WASP的社会比他们原有的腐败落伍的士大夫生“活要合情合理得多;换言之,也就是“现代化”得多了。见贤思齐,他们难免就自惭形秽。至于WASP幕后还有些什么其他的花样,又怎是胡适当年这批二十来岁的中国青年所能体会的呢?也更不是后来一些隔靴搔痒的名流学者们所能透彻了解的了。
近代西方游客,对极权国家旅游事业(通称“观光事业”)的批评,总欢喜用“限制导游”(guided tours)这句话来说明对方只许看好的,不许看坏的。近百年来,美国各界之接待外国留学生,事实上也是一样的。所不同者,美国的限制导游多出诸游客的自愿;另一方面,则是多少有点强迫性质罢了。其实就“限制”一词来说,二者是殊途同归的。只是自动比被动更有效罢了。胡适之先生那一辈,比较有思想的留学生,就是参加了这个自动的“限制导游”,而对美国文明,终身颂之的!”
